Check out our quick link up below. Check check! - Milo
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): So yes yute called Mix Master David, 1st of all how did you get that name?
Mix Master David: I'm trying to come up with how I get the name.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): (laugh)
Mix Master David: I was a big fan of Mix Master Marvin and one of ma home boy just start calling me mix master and that’s how I got the name.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Zeen zeen! Mix Master Marvin from Renaissance right?
Mix Master David: Yeah! And my name is David so that’s how the Mix Master David thing came together.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): So being originally from Jamaica then you must have been influenced by a lot of the djs there. Who would you say were some you looked up to and influence you?
Well its djs or selectors Captain Juggla, Captain Midnight, Stone Love Crew and the list goes on I'm inspired by all sounds, because there is like a little thing about every sound that I like.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): So you take a little piece from everybody, I guess that's why your style is a bit different from the regular dj out there?
Mix Master David: Yeah
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): How would you define your style?
Mix Master David: I don’t know, (laugh) because it’s like something that I do over the years. More time I do stuff and Ii don’t know how I do it. All I’m trying to do is be more creative with what I do.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Talking about over the years, how did you even start out in the music?
Mix Master David: To begin with ma father was a record collector and I could not touch this man's records. So one day a little area party sound Step by Step was playing in ma area and I was there from in the afternoon up until night. I kept hanging with them up until Ii became the guy to operate the bass key then I started to early warm and stuff. And all of this happened at the age of ten.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Deep! At10?
Mix Master David: (laugh)
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): So you in this business a long time then? Where did you go from there?
Mix Master David: At the age of 16 I got a job on Super Saint and that was like a big sound system. And then while doing that I was working at Hot 102 like djing for some announcers and stuff. And then I came to the states and worked with Underground Movements for two years and now here I am doing the Mix Master David thing in Atlanta.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): That’s a lot of traveling and experience. Why even come to Atlanta?
Mix Master David: Well I came here to visit and I was here for a while. While I was here I was watching the market and stuff, and it was not as developed as it is now. So I was like here is where I want to be vs Miami.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Some djs, even those from out of town say Atlanta is a tough market to play for, what do you think about that?
Mix Master David: I will say yes but being the fact that I live here I get to understand what the people want.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae):
I hear you. Does
the traveling and exposure to other markets help you to improve how
you play in Atlanta?
Mix Master David: I will say yeah!
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): A lot of times it seems some local sounds don't get to travel and pick up other flavors to bring here, so they are stuck listening to the same people play and don’t really grow.
Mix Master David: Nothing against other sounds but yes that’s true.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Talking about other local sounds, who do you like playing along side?
Mix Master David: A mean all of them, I'm a cat that knows how to adjust.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): (Laugh) Sounds like a political answer.
Mix Master David: (Laugh)
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Alright. Where do you see the local scene headed for this new year?
Mix Master David: It’s gonna be for the local scene sounds because I can see a lot of improvements in a lot off local sounds in terms of there playing ability.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): So unnuh going to give the out of towners a run for their money then?
Mix Master David: Not saying all ah that but yes! Ah joke! (laugh)
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): (laugh)
Mix Master David: I just see the djs are coming together and playing for the people more and stop proving.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): One thing Ii notice when you think about Miami and New York, it's local sounds running those places and very rarely they import other djs.
Mix Master David: That’s true!
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): You think Atlanta will get to that point?
Mix Master David: Yeah! But people in Atlanta don’t support local sounds They will more respect an out of towner more than the locals. The local sounds and the out of towners play the same and often times I will say the locals play better than the out of towners. The direction in which the sounds are going if we continue the people will get the point.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): What you think it will take for the people to fully support a Mix Master David or a Black Talon, King Ap, Eternity, Textra or a Juggla & John Wayne?
Mix Master David: Just continue to play good for the people. It’s not a one day thing as we go along doing what we are doing the respect will come in.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): So that's for the local scene. What does 2005 hold for Mix Master David?
Mix Master David: More of mix master skills, more remix, more party vibes and I'm trying to do some producing too.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Sounds like a full year for the Atlanta CD Killer! (laugh)
Mix Master David: (laugh)
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): What are the upcoming events for you that the people should look out for?
Mix Master David: Well any thing they see Mix Master David on!
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): Alright sounds good. Anybody you want to big up?
Mix Master David: Yeah God for giving me a talent, all the promoters, club owners, djs, party people along with my fans!
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): What is the next level for Mix Master David? Where do you plan on taking this music thing?
Mix Master David: As I said earlier some producing, going back into broadcasting and maybe promoting.
Milo (Atlanta Reggae): What has been your favorite dance or party you've played at since being in Atlanta?
Mix Master David: Let me see. Playing along side Might Crown in 2003 @ Exclusive when I had to fill in for Leftside & Esco who missed their flight. Crazy vibes!
