CULTURE
Formed in the rich tradition of reggae
harmony trios in the mid 1970's, Culture quickly became a part of the
vibrant, politically charged reggae scene of the day. Originally known
as the African Disciples, the line-up consisted of Joseph Hill (lead
vocals), Albert Walker (backing vocals) and Kenneth Dayes (backing
vocals). Hill was the only member of the trio who had prior studio
experience - having worked at Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One.
Culture came together in 1976 in St. Catherine's Parish where Hill was
born and raised. The group began working with producer Joe Gibbs and
Errol Thompson, recording a series of powerful singles while at Gibbs'
studio. In 1977 the group left Gibbs, and their first album, "Two
Sevens Clash" was released the following year.
The album, released during a time when reggae music was at a crossroads,
is credited for having helped to guide the genre towards new directions.
For Culture that direction was to spread a more aggressive political
message. The title song "Two Sevens Clash", swept across
Jamaica, its power fed by the apocalyptic fever that held the island
throughout late 1976 and into 1977. The song itself was fearless,
celebrating an impending apocalypse (7/7/77), while simultaneously
reminding listeners of a series of prophesies by Marcus Garvey and
twinning them to the island's current state. For those of true faith,
the end of the world did not spell doom, but release from the misery of
life into eternal and heavenly arms.
In 1982 the three singers went their own ways only to reform again in
1986 to record "Culture in Culture" and "Culture at
Work". Today, Culture consists of Hill, Walker and Telford Nelson.
After a lengthy career on his own, Nelson joined on harmony vocals in
1999.
While Culture has now been around for 25 years, Joseph Hill and friends
are showing no signs of slowing down. Hill still maintains a striking
stage presence and fiery energy over the years. Culture has also proved
to be one of the most consistent acts in reggae history - both on
record, and on stage. Other amazing albums include: "Harder than
the Rest", "Baldhead Bridge", "Cumbolo",
International Herb", and "Good Things". Culture is truly
a class act.
